Broken Clutch Cable Symptoms

A clutch cable is the steel braided cable found on manual transmission vehicles that connects the transmission clutch linkage to the clutch pedal mechanism. When the pedal is depressed, the clutch cable pulls on the clutch linkage to disengage the clutch so that the transmission can be safely shifted. When the clutch cable begins to have problems, it can cause issues with shifting the vehicle, which will take away from its overall drivability. Usually a problematic clutch cable will display a few symptoms that can alert the driver that a problem has occurred and needs to be serviced.

Signs of a Broken Clutch Cable

  • Transmission slips out of gear

If you have a bad cable in the clutch, the transmission will slip and fall out of gear. The most common reasons are when the vehicle is pulling a heavy load or when the car is accelerating during a drive. The drivability of the vehicle goes for a toss, and you have to put the transmission back in a separate gear every time the situation occurs.

  • Hard clutch pedal

A similar problem which you face with the cable is when the clutch pedal becomes hard. If the cable is jammed or stuck, it will not come up if the pedal is down. In fact, the pedal will resist any sort of situation when you need to apply and bring the vehicle to a halt. If you consistently applying on the pedal, the cable may break result in an inoperable clutch.

  • Clutch pedal sinks to the floor

If the clutch is not moving from the floor of the car, it is a serious problem. If the cable has broken, the pedal will be detached from the linkage. You will find no change when you press the pedal. Then you will not be able to change gears when you drive and very soon, the vehicle will be in a spate of non-movement.

The car clutch cable can be best defined as a very simple component in design as well as operation. But in failure, problems may arise and the vehicle may be immovable. In case of suspicion it is better to have the vehicle inspected by one of our experts.
