SAQA – the South Africa Qualifications Authority – has provided us with an in-depth explanation of exactly what needs to be carried out for a full brake and clutch assessment. Next time you have either of these critical safe-driving components inspected, ensure you’re getting the below checks carried out.

Plan and prepare for brake and clutch maintenance.

Planning and preparation includes obtaining documentation, interpreting engineering drawings, maintenance schedules and procedures and selecting appropriate tools and equipment.

  • Brakes include disc, thrusters and electromagnetic types.
  • Clutches include centrifugal and multi-disc types.
  • Brake and clutch assemblies are inspected for conformance to manufacturer’s specifications
  • Brake and clutch and / or assemblies are removed
  • Brake and clutch are stripped and parts are identified
  • Parts are cleaned and inspected for non-conformances
  • Bearings and associated parts not conforming to specifications are replaced
  • Replacement brake and clutch components are identified from manufacturer markings and parts publications
  • Brake and clutch components are assembled
  • Brake and clutch assemblies are installed in accordance with manufacturer specifications
  • Locking devices, if any, are secured in accordance with machine requirements
  • Replacement parts and / or assemblies are functionally checked and / or tested
  • Non-conformances are identified and appropriate corrective action taken
  • Work is carried out in a safe manner in accordance with schedules and manufacturer specifications
  • Brake and clutch maintenance process cycle time meets workplace requirements
  • A clean and tidy work environment is maintained
  • No delays are caused as a result of poor planning for replacing brakes and clutches and identifying problems
  • Machine / equipment records are completed in accordance with work site procedures
  • Brake and clutch maintenance report is accurate and clear
  • Applicable health, safety and environmental procedures are adhered to

Brake and clutch serviceability is determined in situ.

  • Brake and clutch assemblies are inspected for conformance to manufacturer’s specifications
  • Brake and clutch and / or assemblies are removed
  • Brake and clutch are stripped and parts are identified
  • Parts are cleaned and inspected for non-conformances
  • Bearings and associated parts not conforming to specifications are replaced

  • Brake and clutch assemblies are installed in accordance with manufacturer specifications
